Mind Map Speech – “I” outline
I. Introduction:
A. Hi, my name is Christopher Norton, and I make things happen.
B. I am a very driven individual that has made the most of every employment opportunity that I have had. I believe that it really doesn’t matter what job you have, satisfaction can be found in doing a job well and to the best of your ability.
C. “Exert your talents, and distinguish yourself, and don't think of retiring from the world, until the world will be sorry that you retire.” -Samuel Johnson
II. Body : Reflection of Self
A. Driven (runner on stairs)
1. I am competitive and driven to succeed.
2. I am constantly looking for better ways to make the industry in which I work more productive and profitable. Whether it is through better sequencing or major routing changes, I have helped increase productivity for the companies I have worked for.
3. Whether it is competing with a fellow employee, or with myself, I find that in order to progress you need to stretch yourself to do better.
4. Transition: Because I have been driven for my whole career, I have learned a lot about the waste hauling industry.
B. Ethical / Responsible (Recycle Truck)
1. The waste hauling industry is unique in that you must comply with many different laws and policies.
2. In order to operate in this industry ethically, you must obey and follow laws from the Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA),and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
3. In addition to operating under these laws and policies, ethical operation in the waste management industry also involves providing solutions for recycling needs of your customers.
4. I have facilitated the necessary compliance with these laws for both small and large companies. Transition: These ethical practices of safe and responsible operation help everyone.
C. Hands-on (tools)
1. I prefer to lead by example. To be among those I supervise and encourage them to do what is right for themselves and the company.
2. I have trained and coached drivers for the past 12 years on the proper procedures of driving our trucks safely. If training is not done right in this industry, sometimes you don’t get a second chance.
3. I have researched and recommended many ideas to my current and past employers. These suggestions have been implemented companywide in many cases. One such idea was a safety incentive program that would reward drivers that went accident free for 3 consecutive years with a nice jacket that they could wear and show off. The first company that I suggested it to took the idea and made it a national incentive award for the company. I suggested it a few years ago at my current employer and it was received with great enthusiasm by both management and the employees.
4. Transition: Though I have learned vast amounts of knowledge I continue every day to better myself.
III. Conclusion
A. I want to continue to improve my knowledge of business and leadership in order to become a better asset to the company that I work for.
B. I have been greatly influenced by my family to continue learning, I want my kids to see that education in all of its forms is important to me.
C. Most Importantly I want people to know that “Energy and persistence conquer all things. -Benjamin Franklin
